João Mendes: Forging His Own Path Beyond Ronaldinho's Legacy at Burnley

João Mendes, son of football legend Ronaldinho, shares how his move to Burnley helps him carve out his own identity in the world of football, away from his father's towering legacy.

João Mendes, the son of football icon Ronaldinho, has opened up about his journey to establish his own identity in the sport, away from the constant comparisons to his legendary father. In an exclusive interview with ESPN Brasil, Mendes discussed how his move to Burnley has been a pivotal step in this journey.

Breaking Free from the Shadow

Mendes has had stints with the youth teams of Cruzeiro and Barcelona but has yet to make a senior appearance. He signed a two-year deal with Championship side Burnley in August, a move he believes has helped him step out of his father's shadow.

"I want to be João, regardless of anything," he emphasized. "I never tried to be my father, I never wanted to be my father. So, to get away a bit from where he played [Barcelona] and what's close, I think it was a good start and a good step for me."

Adapting to New Surroundings

Transitioning from the sunny skies of Barcelona to the chilly winters of Burnley has been a challenge, but Mendes is embracing it.

"It's difficult at first, there's no denying that," he admitted. "Even more so now in winter and here, as it's in the north, it's a bit worse. But if you put on a glove, two socks, we can manage."

Passionate Fanbase

Despite the small-town vibe, Mendes has found a deep connection with the local community.

"Even though it's a small town, people are very passionate and connected to football," he noted. "You can see it at matches here, because [the fans] always fill the stadium. I think that's very nice here, the connection they have with the club is very big."

Family's Perspective

Mendes revealed that his father and mother initially discouraged him from pursuing a football career, anticipating the inevitable comparisons.

"My father and mother never really wanted me to pursue it, because they already knew what was going to happen," he shared. "But when passion speaks louder, you can't help it."

Carving His Own Legacy

Mendes takes pride in his father's legacy but is determined to write his own story.

"My father was one of the best, if not the best, to ever play the game," he said. "So being his son, being able to talk about him, is a source of pride. And I try to do my own thing, I try not to put my father in the middle of things, I try to play my football my way, without pressure."
